How does shipping container delivery actually work, step by step?
Container delivery is a four-step process. (1) Pickup at depot: the trucking company collects the container from the depot where you bought or leased it, after gate-out inspection and paperwork. (2) Road transport to your site: depending on distance, this is typically 200 to 800 USD over 100 to 300 km, and can reach up to 30% of the total delivered cost on short urban hauls. (3) Site placement: the container is positioned at your address using one of three methods (tilt-bed truck, side-loader, or crane, see Q3). (4) Gate-in confirmation: the truck driver gets you to sign delivery acceptance, and the unit becomes your responsibility from that point. Total elapsed time from order to delivery is typically 3 to 10 working days depending on depot availability and distance.
What access does my site need for a container delivery?
Access requirements depend on the delivery method, but in all cases the truck needs a clear, level approach. For a 20DC on tilt-bed truck, plan around 18 to 20 metres of straight approach with no overhead obstructions under 4.5 m (cable, branches, low canopy). For a 40HC on tilt-bed, plan 25 to 30 metres of straight approach. For side-loader delivery (lifting from the side of the truck), you need firm ground and 3 to 4 metres of lateral clearance, more flexible for tight urban sites. For crane delivery, you need crane truck swept area (typically an 8 to 12 metre radius) and confirmed ground bearing. An empty return because the site can't accept the truck costs 200 to 500 USD, so check access before booking.
Tilt-bed truck vs side-loader vs crane, which delivery method?
Three modes, three different use cases. Tilt-bed truck is the cheapest and most common: the truck bed tilts up, the container slides off backwards onto the ground. Needs a straight approach and a firm, flat drop point. Works for most rural and suburban sites. Side-loader (also called swing-lift) lifts the container off the side of the truck with hydraulic arms, placing it precisely. Costs an extra 300 to 600 USD but works on tight sites and lets you place the container in difficult positions (alongside a wall, between buildings). Crane truck uses a mounted crane to lift the box into position, most expensive (often 500 to 1,000 USD additional) but the only option for elevated placements, rooftops, or hard-to-reach inner courtyards.
How do I prepare for the delivery day itself?
Five checks the day before delivery. (1) Final drop-spot confirmed: stake out exactly where the container will sit, with at least 30 cm clearance on each side for door operation. (2) Surface verified: concrete pads or compacted gravel pre-laid (see our site preparation guide). (3) Access cleared: no parked cars, no debris, low branches trimmed, gates open. (4) Driver contact established: have the trucking company's number for that day, in case they need to call from the road. (5) Documentation ready: your delivery confirmation, container number, expected arrival window. Plan to be on site at the start of the delivery window, drivers won't unload without someone confirming receipt.
What commonly goes wrong with container delivery?
Six recurring failure modes. (1) Overhead obstructions missed during site survey, power lines, tree branches, awnings. The truck cannot tilt or lift under them. (2) Soft ground that the truck wheels sink into, especially after rain. (3) Tight turns the chassis can't make (a 40HC needs more turning radius than most home driveways provide). (4) Wrong drop angle: a tilt-bed places the container facing the direction of the truck, if you needed the doors facing the other way, you have a problem. (5) No one on site at delivery: drivers won't drop without acceptance, and a wasted run costs you 200 to 500 USD. (6) Surface not ready: a delivery onto bare uneven ground will leave the container twisted, and doors may not close properly afterwards.
