Once a container leaves maritime rotation, though, the equation changes completely: on land, in static use — storage, workshop, modular building, conversion — the same physical box can serve 40 years or more with proper maintenance, because the corrosion and stress drivers that retire it from the sea simply aren't there. This is the practical key to the used-container market: a CW retired from shipping isn't at the end of its life, it's at the end of its maritime life. Its second life on land is often longer than the first. When you read a generic 20-25 years figure online, that is the maritime number — the on-land potential is much longer.

Is it worth buying a new container instead of a used one?

(3) Conversion projects where you'll cut, weld, and finish: starting from a clean shell saves rework time and avoids surprises hidden under old paint. Outside these cases, used (CW for shipping, WWT for storage) is the rational choice — a New / One-Trip is roughly twice the price of an equivalent used CW, and the maritime lifespan delta (25 vs 15 years) doesn't justify that premium for most use cases, especially for on-land static use where both grades will outlast the project anyway.

(2) Floor: tap the timber across the full length, listen for hollow or soft spots — floor replacement is one of the most expensive repairs and a deal-killer on a marginal price. (3) Door seals and locking bars: rubber gaskets compressed, doors closing flush without forcing, locking bars turning fully — leaky doors mean wet cargo, and replacement is non-trivial. (4) Corrosion pattern: surface rust is normal and cosmetic; pitting that goes through the steel, especially on the underside cross-members, is structural and ages the container fast. (5) Roof: most often-overlooked area — pooled water, dents holding moisture, and pinhole rust around vents are common and easy to miss without climbing up. A clean inspection report from the depot covers some of this; for any significant amount or any used grade bought remotely (CW, As-Is), you can have an independent third party inspect the container on site and issue a counter-report — a service commonly offered by port survey companies.

For New / One-Trip units, manufacturers do not issue a forward consumer-style warranty on shipping containers; what you get is the maker's QC and the fact that the box is factory-new and unused for cargo. For IICL and Cargo Worthy, you receive a condition certification at the moment of inspection (the CSC plate and the depot's pre-shipment inspection report) — the seller certifies the container's state as inspected, but doesn't underwrite future failures. For WWT and As-Is, the unit is explicitly sold in its current condition with no forward guarantee. The practical implication is the same across all grades: the inspection at the time of purchase is your warranty. Once you accept the container, future repairs are on you. This is why a third-party survey on used grades does more real work than a paper warranty would in this trade.

New / One-Trip loses roughly 5% per year over the first 10 years as it transitions from new to used in the buyer's perception and accumulates wear from rotation. After that 10-year point, the value flattens out: a well-maintained 10-year-old container holds its grade-appropriate price remarkably steady, because at that stage market value is driven by current condition and certification status, not age. Cargo Worthy units bought already at the 5-15 year mark sit on that flat part of the curve from day one: resale value after 2-3 years of static storage use is often within 10-20% of purchase price, sometimes higher in undersupplied regions. WWT and As-Is essentially hold their grade-appropriate value if maintained. The strategic takeaway: for short-to-medium term storage (under 5 years), buying CW and reselling at the end can be cheaper than long-term leasing, because depreciation in that grade is shallow. For long-term static use (10+ years), there's typically no resale to plan — the container becomes part of the site, and on land it has decades left.
